How to tell a real locksmith from a call center

The locksmith trade has a well-documented problem with out-of-town lead brokers: you search, you call a local-looking number, and a subcontractor arrives with a quote several times what you were told on the phone. It is worth knowing how to check, whoever you end up calling.

Ask for the Texas locksmith licence number and confirm it belongs to the company, not just a person. Ask for a price range on the phone and expect a straight answer. Watch for a marked vehicle and a technician who identifies the company by name. And be wary of any quote that starts at a suspiciously low service-call fee — that is usually the hook rather than the price.

What we actually do all day

Most of our work is not dramatic. It is rekeying a house for a family that just closed on it, cutting a spare fob so somebody is not stranded later, adding a proper deadbolt to a back door, or building a master key system for a small business that has outgrown handing out copies. The 2 a.m. lockouts are real and we take them, but the everyday work is the trade.
